Connective Diversity Activity
Sometimes it can be hard to see how we can be connected. Sometimes diversity is seen more as ‘foreign from self’ than as ‘how we can stand together’. This map activity is a technology enabled way to share our stories, explore our family origins, and focus on relationships and sense of place. Each pin allows for a story to be told accompanied by an image. Placing pins on the map allows us to better visualize the diversity of where our stories come from. It also allows us to see connections in the closeness or denseness of locations. Imagine a map populated with a class of student stories and then having students explore their classmates stories. Stories could come from meaningful relationships students have, for example, from an elder, family member or mentor. Stories could also directly refer to important places in the students’ lives. To encourage connection and reflection, class discussions could revolve around similarities and differences in stories, and making connections between others, self and geographical place.
Tell us about yourself
We have each added two pins on the map, one describes our beginnings and the other describes where we are now. We invite you share your stories. To add your pins to the map scroll to the bottom of the page and click FPPL Map – Form. Fill in the Post Title and Location-coordinates fields, tell us about your beginnings and where you are now in the Post Content field and finally upload a featured image by clicking the Upload or select image button. Click Submit to drop your pin! (Since you are not logged in the post will not automatically add your name, the Post Title or Post Content fields are great places to add your name. You are welcome to remain anonymous!) We have included instructions outlining how to create your own interactive mapping activity. Click to download the pdf.
