Kevin Monkman’s beginnings – Peguis First Nation

Peguis, MB R0C 3J0, Canada

I, Kevin Monkman, am registered through Peguis First Nation, as both a band member, as well as with the Federal Government’s registry of Indian Status.  Though I have never lived in Peguis, my ancestors originated from the red-river area and north.  My brother, and two cousins still hold property in Loone Straits, MB, where my late grandparents set up a homestead in the late 1930s.  Though I am a Peguis band member, I sadly do not have a strong connection to the culture, place or language because I did not grow up in Peguis and I have spent most of my life in British Columbia, after having moved from Sundance, MB in 1990.  That said, I feel a deep pull to that land, and I plan to spend time each summer visiting once I graduate from UBC’s MET program, so I can have a stronger connection to the place my ancestors lived.
